Disciple
Description
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light—(1 Peter 2:9, ESV).
I learned how to be a disciple–someone who accepts and helps to spread the teachings of Jesus–alongside a bunch of newly converted biker/hippies.
While this may not be the most conventional way of growing in faith, for me it was amazing as it shook up my Sunday school learnin’ and turned all the lessons into a true relationship with Jesus. My co-disciples didn't conform to the church. Instead, the church was awakened and challenged by their ‘all-for-Jesus’ lifestyles and hearts.
Radical faith and living is contagious. Did you ever notice that? That’s why cults can be so enticing. People don’t want their lives to conform; they want something that is going to transform them! Modern day churches typically don’t call anyone to do anything difficult or unpopular. No, they have become unchallenging, vanilla safe places.
Reading the book of Acts and seeing how the Christians lived is where it’s at. To believe, follow and share Christ was a dangerous thing for which many gave their lives.
We too are called to give our lives away. We are to walk on this earth shouting how excellent He is and calling people out of their darkness to a life of crazy love living in His Light. Our lives should reflect something different and enticing. Francis Chan did a talk a few years ago and a clip can be found on YouTube called ‘Balance Beam’. It’s less than four minutes long. Watch it and be challenged to get up, shake off your religious rules of do’s and don’ts and be transformed into a life of passion!
