Died with Christ: Identification and New Life
In these two verses, Paul describes what our identity in Christ is all about:
First, he stated that we died to rules so we can have a relationship: For through the Law I died to the Law, that I might live to God (Gal 2:19-21). The reason we have died to the Law is because we have died with Christ, and we have a new source of life that allows us—more like encourages us—to live for God: "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me."
So, we walk by faith in the Son of God, we have died with the Son of God, and we have his life within us. Everywhere we turn we meet the provision of God through Christ. This way of living only works when we recognize our identity with Christ. We have not been joined to the rules but to the righteous Son of God. Jesus Christ defines completely our relationship to God. It is not what you do. It is what Christ has done for you! And it is also what Christ is doing within you. The Holy Spirit is bringing the life and character of Christ to bear on our personality and relationships. God sees us in Christ, and as we respond spiritually, so others will see Christ in us.
