And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. (Colossians 2:13-14 ESV)
Lately social media has been full of stories of good Samaritans hiding money around cities or ‘pranking’ deserving people with financial or life-changing blessings. I can’t imagine being given a car, or having a mortgage paid off by a stranger, but God bless them, it’s been happening more and more.
Walking away from an obligation is such a relief. I know when I made my last car payment it felt pretty good!
Yet, these life-changing events are nothing compared to the debt that was wiped out by Christ on the cross. Here was a payment that none of us could make! There we stood, spiritually broke, guilty and without a defense . . . and then He walked in. God not only canceled a life-sentence that we would have deserved, He canceled our debts and all records of wrong! A full pardon, forever!
Father, we thank You that You are a God of mercy who not only rescues us from punishments that we do deserve, but You also give us blessings that we aren’t worthy of. Help us to fully grasp the debt You rescued us from and respond by pouring Your grace and mercy into the lives of others. Amen
