Daring to Risk

Description

The Lord is looking for those who will deny themselves, take up their crosses and follow Him. He is looking for those who will risk losing everything.

When we know the Lord, our heavenly Father, we can follow Him by faith and take risks. Even when we cannot see one shred of evidence of His presence, even when tomorrow seems bleak, even when all our fears come to mind and questions flood our thoughts, we can hear Him. The still small voice says, “Come and follow Me.”  And that is all we need to take the risk.

But if God does not call us to take a risk then we shouldn’t move. Discerning His voice is so critical. We should only move out when we know the Lord is asking us to do it. Before Peter stepped out of the boat he said, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water” (see Matthew 14:28). Then he waited for Jesus to call him before he stepped out.

When God calls, we can step out in faith. But without hearing His voice, our risk taking is nothing but foolishness. Please understand this. I am not promoting taking risks for the sake of excitement or challenge. What I am promoting is following the Lord and taking whatever follows.

Why did Christ select the disciples He did? People have different ideas on this. But one thing is obvious. All the disciples were willing to go anywhere Jesus went. They left steady jobs, family and friends to follow Him. Although sometimes they lapsed, the disciples were willing to risk persecutions and imprisonment. This was true to the extent that they were willing to die with him. And indeed, history tells us that, except for John, all the disciples died martyrs. You see, the Lord is looking for someone who will deny himself, take up his cross and follow the Lord—someone who will risk losing everything.
