Daily Battle with Sin

When we focus on clinging to Jesus like a branch to a vine, we do better than when we try to stand on our own.

“If you, God, kept records on wrongdoings, who would stand a chance? As it turns out, forgiveness is your habit, and that’s why you’re worshiped.” Psalm 130:3–4 (msg)

In the more than forty years that I’ve been walking with Jesus, I’ve grown, I’ve learned, I’ve had faith and trusted. And also, I haven’t. I’ve sinned, I’ve ignored the truth, I’ve doubted and I’ve been afraid. I’ve gone through seasons of rebellion—some that people could see, and some that I kept well-hidden. I’ve made some pretty big mistakes, and if my track record is anything to go on, I’m not done making them.

Even when we become all-new people and are washed shiny clean by Jesus, we’re going to continue to sin. The surest path to less sin is to stop trying to do it on our own, and surrender. We learn this paradoxical lesson quite slowly. When we focus on clinging to Jesus, like a branch to a vine, we do better than when we try to stand on our own. As Paul commiserates in Romans 7, sometimes we do that which we don’t want to do; we battle daily with sin.

The Bible is clear: sin is part of our condition. But confession and repentance bring us into the light of grace. And even though we won’t be perfect until we’re in heaven, He can change us in the here and now into grace-filled people.

Jesus is the one who rescues us from ourselves, who continues to forgive us. As this psalm reminds us, Jesus is a habitual forgiver! What a promise. Written centuries before Jesus’ birth, this verse points prophetically to the everlasting mercy of God and the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

FAITH STEP: Spend some time confessing specific sin in your life—patterns of thought, actions or attitudes. Receive His abundant forgiveness, and then spend some time worshiping Jesus for His habit of forgiveness, for His ever-renewing mercies.
