Courage to Stand Alone
Danny Wuerffel was quarterback for the University of Florida when he was named Playboy magazine’s 1996 National Scholar Athlete of the Year. It was a very prestigious award, and Danny was invited to receive it at an exclusive resort. But he politely refused!
Danny was publicly criticized while another athlete received the honor. That took strength. Strength that came from Danny talking to God and reading his Bible. It came from listening to God and from caring more about what God thinks than what others think.
Deuteronomy 30:20 says: “Love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.” Hold fast! It’s key to giving you the courage to endure criticism and stand fast instead of going along with something that doesn’t honor God.
At the end of the 1996 football season, Danny was given the coveted Heisman Trophy for best college football player of the year. Danny honored God — and God honored Danny. Will you be one whom God honors because you’ve had the courage to stand alone?
