Joy is powerful and wonderfully contagious. How can you share a joyous pick-me-up with someone today?
May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy. Colossians 1:11, ESV
“Bye, Mommy! Daddy and I are goin’ swimmin’!”
I watched my three-year-old son and my husband head down to the dock before I collapsed on the couch. As I thanked Jesus for my daughter’s naptime, I marveled at how easily I could feel zapped of vitality. An hour later, my baby girl and I met our guys for some lake fun. The scene that greeted us still brings tears to my eyes.
“Look, Mom, I’m swimming!” Paxton hollered from the dock ladder. I reached him in time to see him push off and doggy-paddle to his dad. He wasn’t kidding! He was swimming! Okay, so he was wearing a life jacket, but this was still a huge milestone, because as much as he loves the water, he had yet to let go of us and venture off on his own. It was the cutest thing I ever saw, little legs pedaling furiously, little arms paddling the water like puppy paws. And the unrestrained joy that lit his entire body… oh, the precious ache of it all! I clapped; I cheered; my heart soared with him in his exuberance. And in that moment, my weariness vanished, and I felt like I could swim across the lake with him just to share in his boundless joy.
Joy is powerful and wonderfully contagious. The Lord knew what He was talking about when He inspired the Scripture writers to connect strength and joy so frequently. (See Nehemiah 8:10 and psalm 28:7.) And like my child’s heart, Jesus’ heart yearns to share His excitement for life and eternity with us. He doesn’t need to share those gifts, but it brings Him pleasure to do so.
Thank you, Jesus, for speaking through my child’s heart, so like your own. And thank you for the unexpected energy boost of shared joy.
