Christ, Head of the Church
And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be Head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way.
Ephesians 1:22-23, NIV
The church belongs to Jesus Christ! Shouldn’t that settle most every church dispute that has ever, or will ever, occur again?
Recently, a friend told me about a church that split over the color of hymnal selections. I guess some people take those things fairly serious. After all, you do have to match the church carpet, don’t you? Seriously, arguments in churches sometimes seem to rise out of the most trivial issues.
Doesn’t the church belong to Christ? Shouldn’t the goal of the church be first and foremost to please God and honor Christ? Isn’t the role of the church to do the work of Christ who died for it?
I think one of the biggest challenges facing the church today is not to reach the lost. Oh, that is our job, and it should be our priority, but I think where we struggle most is sometimes just getting along with each other. We disagree over issues, granted, some of them major issues, but that keeps us from combining efforts to accomplish what is really important!
Wouldn’t a solution be to let Christ rule our churches? Wouldn’t it work better if we allowed Jesus to be in control? How different would our churches look if Christ were truly the Head of our body? Would it solve some disagreements? Would it offer some solutions? Would it provide clear direction?
Christ is the Head of the Church. God will have it no other way! Our mission should be to allow Him to take His appropriate position within the work of our church! Only then will our churches accomplish all God would have us to do!
