A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22
A cheerful heart sounds so simple, so easy, but in “real” life, being cheerful can be very difficult. As a mom, our spirits can easily be crushed. Crushed if we feel taken advantage of by our family. Crushed if we feel as if life is passing us by. Crushed if my husband neglects me and consumes himself with work. But a crushed spirit dries up the bones. It makes us brittle and harsh, cold and distant. No one wants to have those attributes.
The antidote to a crushed spirit is a cheerful heart. Being cheerful is a choice. God promises us that if we choose joy, it will be like good medicine to our bodies. We will stay young in spirit and loving toward others. Instead of being harsh we will be kind. Instead of being cold, we will be warm toward others.
Don’t allow your circumstances in life to steal your joy. You are too beautiful of a woman to have dry, brittle bones. Choose joy today. Choose joy when you are helping your child with their homework. Choose joy when your husband comes home
late because of work. Choose joy when your infant wakes up in the middle of the night for a feeding. Choose joy!
Father, thank You that You give me a choice of being cheerful or having a crushed spirit. As I go about my day, point out things that I take for granted that I need to be cheerful about. Give me a cheerful heart, and help me to teach that to my children.
