Cast Away Distractions
James 1:13-14 (NIV®)
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.
You may have noticed that in spite of being a Christ-follower, you will occasionally give in to temptation and make an ungodly choice. This verse gives a different perspective on temptation and describes it as a force pulling us away from God’s best. Sometimes the greatest temptations we face are the ones we don’t even recognize. We get so caught up in the culture and the ungodliness around us that we lose our sense of distinctiveness and are swept along with the tide. We all have these internal, carnal desires that pull us away from godliness, and we must ask God for the courage to identify and cast away anything that would distract or draw us away from Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who gives me insight into the state of my heart and mind. Help me to follow His leading as I make choices big and small, because pleasing and honoring You is my highest aim. Show me anything in me that would pull me from Your best. In Jesus’ name, amen.
