Can You Face the Light?
“The vague and tenuous hope that God is too kind to punish the ungodly has become a deadly opiate for the consciences of millions.” – A. W. Tozer
It happens every year at camp. At the evening campfire, there is some little girl who has the newest, brightest turbo-charged flashlight. It’s got like a car battery on the back of it, a big huge bulb, and a beam that rivals the Star Wars Death Star. The problem is that she thinks it’s funny to shine that thing in your eyes. BA-ZAAAP! It actually hurts; melting your corneas and cooking your retinas—just like 1 Timothy 6:15-16 (seriously!):
God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be the honor and might forever.
God is Light, but there are places in Scripture where it tells us that He is a blinding light. That’s the image here in 1 Timothy. God is holy and, before we knew Him, we were not! Some people hope that God is only kind, and will not punish. But the fact is you couldn’t approach Him because of sin. When the light comes on, BA-ZAAAP! You must turn away…
…unless you are “in Christ.”
This critical aspect of your new identity makes all the difference.
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. —Hebrews 4:16
We can approach a perfectly holy God with confidence?! Yes. In Christ we can embrace the Light!
Holy Father, I thank You from the depths of my heart for what You did through Christ so that we can approach You with confidence. I fully recognize that it is only through Your amazing grace (and not by anything I have done), that this is possible. I praise You! Amen.
