Bunny Ears

Question is, which way do we turn our ears . . . towards the things of this world, or the things of God?

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)

We are not a family who watches a lot of television but when we do, it can be frustrating when the cable cuts out. One day during one of those times, I mentioned that I wished we had some bunny ears. My daughters were confused as to what I was talking about. How do you even begin to explain the science behind antennaes to a generation that holds a computer in their palm?

In reality, I had no idea how they worked. But, then I realized we had a living breathing example in our dog, Mona. A Scottie-terrier-dachshund mix, her large black ears rotate like an owl’s head in order to pick up curious sounds. That the girls understood.

You know, we humans have ears that can choose what to listen to as well. As we walk through life we have choices in what we tune into and what we tune out. Question is, which way do we turn our ears . . . towards the things of this world, or the things of God?

Father, forgive us for choosing the unlovely things of this world when You have designed and called us to tune into You. Help us to have ears to hear what You are speaking to Your church today.
