Build Your Life on Solid Rock
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25, NIV)
I’ve always enjoyed using my hands to build and make things, especially now, since much of my time is spent in the world of words and ideas. Early in life, I worked as a journeyman electrician and a carpenter. I had the opportunity to work on many interesting projects: office buildings, schools, a dam at a large lake, and custom homes. My father and I built a home on the family farm where he lived until his death. One project stands out – a custom home built on a hill with a 15-mile view of the surrounding forests. Everything was designed and built to suit life in a wheelchair for a friend.
Before Karen and I were married, I owned a 113-year-old Victorian style home. After evaluating our needs as a couple, we decided to move into Karen’s home and turn my former home into a rental property. Every time I think of it or look back at pictures, I have a deep appreciation for its beauty, master craftsmanship, and its ability to withstand the winds and storms of time. Living in Houston close to the Gulf of Mexico, we have lived through several hurricanes and fierce tropical storms that produce torrential rains and flash floods. We have seen bayous and rivers swell beyond their banks and flood many homes and businesses. We have witnessed 100-mile per hour winds as they demolished buildings, uplifted roofs and toppled huge trees that stood tall for over a century.
Child of God, how is your foundation? Have you built your life on solid rock (God’s Word) or shifting sand? What challenges are you facing at work or home right now? Will your life withstand the tests of time or collapse in ruin when fierce winds rage around you? I encourage you to decide today to build your life on God’s Word so you may stand tall in the face of every storm that comes your way.
Lord, thank you for your Word. You are my Rock, Shelter, and Refuge from every storm. Teach me to trust and rely on you at all times. Through the blood of Jesus and in the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
