Bittersweet Moments of Life

Are you going through a bittersweet time? Jesus is there for you. What step will you take to strengthen your relationship with Him?

Endings often pave the pathway for new beginnings. The last couple weeks have been full of bittersweet moments. But with every sad experience, the Lord supplied an underlying current of hope and joy for the future.

A new chapter

It started with a big surprise for our daughter, Riley. I still have a hard time describing all the emotions I felt when my husband and I got her text: “I said yes!” The three words and picture of a beautiful engagement ring reminded me that our daughter was in transition.

Steve and I were thrilled for our girl and future son-in-law. But I have to admit, a part of me struggled with the thought that Riley would be leaving the nest for good and starting a new life of her own. All parents know it’s going to happen, but the thought is bittersweet, nonetheless.

A difficult decision

On the heels of celebrating Riley’s engagement, it was clear we’d have to address another issue – the need to put one of our pets to sleep. Our cat Courtney had been diagnosed with cancer a few weeks earlier, and had gone downhill quickly.

Courtney was Riley’s first pet. She had lived a long life, but it didn’t make the final trip to the vet any easier. Our sadness was tempered by the knowledge our cat was no longer in pain. Bittersweet.

Jesus understands

Jesus was no stranger to grief:

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief Isaiah 53:3a

It’s hard for me to comprehend how He lowered Himself to become a man and was willing to taste the bittersweet moments life offered.

Importance of relationships

I remember the friendship he shared with Lazarus. Jesus spent a lot of time at his home. Any time he was in Bethany, Jesus knew he was welcome at the table of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.

It was no surprise to Jesus when He received word from Mary and Martha that Lazarus was sick. He knew Lazarus would die. And He knew He would raise Lazarus back to life. But the foreknowledge did nothing to change what might be two of the most beautiful words in the Bible:

Jesus wept. John 11:35

Real emotions

Jesus cared about Lazarus. He was filled with sadness at His friend’s death and how the death had impacted those around Him. With a prayer to His Heavenly Father and three spoken words, Lazarus was raised from the dead:

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, John 11:43-44a

Relationships were important to Jesus.

Life in Jesus’ day and life in our day is filled with bittersweet moments. When tough things happen He’s there to support us. When we celebrate, He’s there to celebrate with us. No matter what life brings, knowing that we have a relationship with Jesus, makes all the difference.

Your turn

Are you going through a bittersweet time? Jesus is there for you. What step will you take to strengthen your relationship with Him?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your Son, Jesus. I’m so glad He understands the emotions I experience. Help me grow in my relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
