Bible Study on 'Consuming Fire' by Third Day

Description

Third Day’s song, "Consuming Fire" reminds us that God wants to consume us with his presence.

Set this place on fire
Send your Spirit, Saviour
Rescue from the mire
Show your servant favour

Yesterday was the day that I was alone
Now I'm in the presence of Almighty God

And yes, our God, He is a consuming fire
And the flames burn down deep in my soul
Yes, our God is a consuming fire
He reaches inside and He melts down this
cold heart of stone

Did you ever realize that inside of you there is a flame?
Did you ever try to let it burn, let it burn,
let it burn?

BIBLE PASSAGES TO READ:

Acts 2.1-4

Deuteronomy 4.23-24

Malachi 3.1-4

Hebrews 12. 28-29

Fire is often used to describe the presence of God in the Bible, not least in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit comes upon the disciples on the day of Pentecost.

Previously afraid and uncertain, they are transformed into bold witnesses, seeing 3,000 new believers, and setting up the early church. Some of these disciples even sacrificed their lives for the sake of Jesus in the coming years.

Incredible transformation like this happens when you have been touched by the flame, and when you have had an encounter with the presence of God.

Third Day’s song Consuming Fire  reminds us that God wants to consume us with his presence. As you read the passages in Deuteronomy and Hebrews, focus on these main points:

*God’s presence is available to all of us, like a blazing fire inside us, by His Holy Spirit.

*God wants us to be consumed most of all by Him not by anything or anyone else. His Holy flame helps us worship Him as we are meant to.

*God’s consuming fire works on the inside burning up all the rubbish and bad things that are in our lives. Heating us up and skimming off the impurities, reducing to ashes anything we have idolized above God.

*God wants for us to have the same bold and passionate faith that the early disciples had when the Holy Spirit came upon them like flames of fire.
