Beyond Our Inconsistency

Don’t set the truth about God aside because the messenger has clay feet.

1 John 1:8 (NIV®)

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

People say to me, “I can’t be a Christian because so many of them are hypocrites.” That’s true, there is a lot of hypocrisy among Jesus-followers, but it’s a lousy excuse not to follow Him. Sometimes we think that because someone is inconsistent in their practice, the truth they hold is irrelevant. If your doctor tells you to change your diet because your arteries are getting blocked and then you see him at Waffle House with a plate of scattered and smothered hash browns, his behavior has nothing to do with your heart health. Don’t set the truth about God aside because the messenger has clay feet. Following the Lord is tough. And if you’re a believer who struggles to get it right, welcome to the team!

Heavenly Father, thank You that You see beyond my inconsistences to love me and allow me to serve Your Kingdom purposes. Forgive me for the times when I have looked on other Jesus-followers with judgment. May I see people with Your eyes, Lord, and draw them closer to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
