Beyond His Years

Description

Many children in Thailand are forced to work instead of going to school, but not ten-year-old Kamut.

Kamut, 10, is in the third grade. He also cuts cassava to help support his family.

Like many children in his village, Kamut lives with his grandparents; his parents moved to Thailand for work.  Now Kamut is working, too. He had to find a part time job to earn money for school supplies.

"I chop cassava in order to save money to buy books and pens," says Kamut. "I earn 500 to 1500 riel (0.13 to 0.38 USD) a day.”

Kamut loves studying; he doesn't stop. But many children are forced to work instead of getting an education.
