Philippians 4:11–13, 19
I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength... And my God will meet all our needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Contentment is learned. We are not born with it; we don’t naturally possess it, but through Christ, we can have it. In order to be content, we must begin to look to God and realize that everything comes from him. Be grateful for what God has given you and learn to be joyful in your existing circumstances. Choose thankfulness over discontentment.
To give thanks in all circumstances does not mean that you live in a fantasy world, where everything is wonderful. You can acknowledge that you are not happy with the circumstances in your life, that you would rather be in a different place, but you can thank God that He is in control. Thank God for His promise to works ALL things for our good. (Romans 8:28) Choose gratefulness.
Father, my natural tendency is to want what others have and to become discontent with what I have. God, give me a grateful heart. Open my eyes so I will see circumstances through your eyes and not mine. Thank you for meeting all of my needs. Amen
