Become a Person Others Follow

Do you want to become a person others follow? Incorporate these qualities and characteristics to grow as a leader.

Three leadership qualities to grow as a leader

When Moses, a leader of millions, looked for leadership, he followed this advice: "Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens."

Character - #1 quality of leadership
You must demonstrate trustworthiness on a continuing basis for people to follow you. It means meeting your commitments, and being a promise keeper. Walking with integrity and being consistent in your words and deeds. Serving with sincerity, and demonstrating your support for, care of and trust in others. As David wrote in Psalm 15: "He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart..."

Competence - #2 quality of leadership
No one will follow you if they think you are incompetent. Since you can't know everything, what do you have to know to be a leader? First, you must possess specifically relevant functional and/or industry expertise. Second, you must know how to manage things - plan, organize and control. Third, you must know how to direct people - hire and fire, assign and instruct, encourage and stimulate. For all the things you need to know, consider this advice: "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

Charisma - #3 quality of leadership
Not a function of outgoing personality or popularity, but rather the product of four inward characteristics: Vision - seeing a preferred future. Wisdom - knowing how to get there. Strength - personal energy and endurance. Courage - the heart to face fearful situations and move through them. From the last words of King David: "He who rules over men as the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, when the tender grass springs out of the earth, through sunshine after rain."
