Back to School

Hurricane Patricia roared ashore on Oct. 8, 2015 at Cuixmala on Mexico’s central Pacific coast after peaking as the worst hurricane on record. While the winds quickly dissipated, the storm brought rain and flash floods to the mountainous Mexican interior.

As soon as the weather cleared, families began to leave evacuation centers to see how their houses and farms had fared.

Says World Vision’s Vic Martinez, "The river flooded hundreds of homes; the families lost everything."

After cleaning their own homes, teachers and volunteers cleared mud and debris from schools.

“Luckily there were not any lives lost, only material things that can be recovered,” says kindergarten teacher Ana.

“I hope that we will be able to clean this quickly so the children can go back to school as soon as possible. This [the recovery] is a social act that we all can help with.”

World Vision is helping communities to recover and prepare for the next storms to come their way.
