Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. (Ephesians 4:29 ESV)
Right after I bought my new smart phone, I was sending one of my first texts to my older daughter with my younger one reading over my shoulder. I don’t recall exactly what I was asking her to do, (most likely to pick up some chocolate or a caffeinated concoction). Suddenly, just before I hit send, the entire message changed and was full of vulgar and downright shocking words. My teenage daughter screamed and I quickly erased the text before it was sent. It was bizarre, and I can only guess that because there was no history of common words from me as a user, it just assumed that my shorthand was wrong and ‘autocorrected’ my transcription into a terrible interpretation.
Have I ever mentioned how much I hate autocorrect?
But what if we as Christians had an autocorrect on our mouths? Now that could be productive.
What if just when we are about to lose our cool and let loose some less-than-exhorting words, something took over and spun our hurtful spew into something beautiful, uplifting and wonderful? How cool would that be? Well, there are times when the Holy Spirit autocorrects:
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit . . . Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. (Romans 8:5 & 26 ESV)
When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, often our tongue will say things we didn’t even know! There have been times when the Lord has given me an answer to defend my faith or even to assist me at work; an answer that I am actually stunned to hear myself.
Now there’s an autocorrect that I can appreciate.
Father, You know our minds and our loose, dangerous tongues. Help us to turn over control of our hearts and words to You, Holy Spirit so that You can change us from the inside out. Amen!
