Authority in the Cross
Romans 6:6 (NIV®)
We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.
We are hardwired toward ungodliness. Have you noticed? We don’t need classes on how to be selfish or stubborn or impatient. We’re just naturally good at those things! But this verse has great news: we have been given authority over our carnal nature. Many of us seem to live almost in ignorance of the authority that has been given to us. We think whatever authority we have is derived from the correctness of our doctrine, the group to which we belong, the sign on the building where we gather. Our authority is much greater than any of those things because it is anchored in the redemptive work of Jesus of Nazareth. When you are faced with your carnal nature, and you will be, remind yourself that you are no longer a slave to sin because your old self was crucified with Jesus. That’s an amazing promise!
Heavenly Father, I claim and rest in the authority You have given me through Your Son, Jesus of Nazareth, and His death and resurrection. Again today I place my ungodliness at the foot of the cross and remind myself that I am no longer a slave to my carnal nature. Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness to me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
