“‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.’ And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.” 2 Chronicles 32:7–8 (tniv)
We live in a very self-sufficient society. You’re expected to take care of yourself—as well as your family—and be independent and strong. You’re considered weak if you have to ask for help. Society admires people who can accomplish things all on their own.
Independence isn’t a bad thing. If we were too reliant on others to help us get our work done, we’d never finish our projects. Think about if we needed someone to help us cook dinner every night. Our family would starve if the help wasn’t there one night.
But too often when we’re facing trials and troubles and difficulties, we don’t immediately ask God for help. When the disciples were in the boat and caught in the storm on the lake, they didn’t wake Jesus up right away, even though they probably could have used the muscle power, at the very least, to help keep the boat afloat. I always wonder if they woke Him up because they needed Him to hold a rope or something like that, not necessarily thinking He’d do something miraculous.
But Jesus rebuked the storm and the disciples were in awe, despite the other miracles they’d seen Him do.
Aren’t we like that, too? We finally call on Jesus to help us, and then we’re amazed when He does something wonderful.
FAITH STEP: Are you going through some troubles now? Are you working through something where you haven’t yet prayed to ask Jesus for help? He’ll be there to calm the storm for you, if you ask Him.
