Are You Worshipping Something Else?
In the busy world we live in, and in the politically correct culture of the Western world, it’s very possible to be completely unaware of the ‘reason for the season’ and to miss out on the Advent message that the King is coming. In Luke’s gospel the angels announce to the shepherds that there is good news on the way, and that it is good news for everyone. The baby born in Bethlehem is to be the savior, Jesus, Light of the World. Here is one reason why people miss that great news today. Be sure you don’t do the same!
Read Luke 2.15-20
Often we assume the sin of idolatry, of idol worship is something that died out thousands of years ago, or at least can only be found today in primitive jungle tribes. Unfortunately, it’s alive and well in contemporary society! For example, some might say that materialism is one of the most deadly idols the world has ever seen!
Whilst the shepherds were truly in awe of what they had seen, the citizens of Jerusalem were caught up in religious ritual and the Romans were worshipping their own gods and idols.
Each Christmas offers us anew the wonderful gift of the incarnation, and the realization that God loves the world He created, and He has intervened once and for all to redeem it and to save humanity from their sin. But Christmas is also overwhelmed by commercialism, and for even the most devout believer it’s hard not to get caught up in the popular celebration of the Christmas holiday--often without Christ.
This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t celebrate or enjoy yourself--far from it! Christmas is a time for joy and for celebration! But don’t get so caught up in some of the trappings of Christmas that we can so easily idolize. Gifts, foods, parties, seeking pleasure for pleasure’s sake, can all derail us from the deep, deep joy that only comes at Christmas when we receive the greatest gift of all, the love of God through his precious son Jesus.
Joy to the world, the Lord has come,
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing.
