An Overflow of Love
May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 1 Thessalonians 3:12
It is not always easy to love, and yet, love is the heart of the Gospel. As Christians, we move and breathe and live in His love. God doesn’t ask us to love the least of these. He commands it.
There are difficult people here in Uganda and there are difficult people where you live. There was a man in the village where I work named Makerere. He was the neighborhood drunk and nobody liked him. Many times I saw him and I usually avoided him. Then one day his neighbors set fire to his run-down shack, and he was burned so severely he almost lost his leg. His dressings needed to be changed every day, and so he came to live at our house. Day after day as I would scrape out his skin and tend his wound, he would tell me little pieces of his heart-wrenching story. I came to know him and love him. A couple of months into our daily ritual, I was able to tell Makerere about Jesus. Tears dropped to my tile floor as I shared with him about a God who loved him unconditionally. Today, Makerere is walking with Jesus.
We are sinful, broken human beings. In our own strength, our love is conditional, discriminatory, and it will eventually dry up. But we can love people that are hard to love out of the overflow of the love that He is giving us.
