An Expectation of Holiness

"Be holy." Don't be casual with the things of God, because it says you don’t value what Jesus did for you.

1 Peter 1:15-16 (NIV®)

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

People don’t talk much about holiness anymore. Holiness is probably not a common conversation in the break room.  You probably won’t hear your favorite television characters discussing it or see it lifted up as the ideal in advertisements. However, God has unchanging expectations for how His people should live, and holiness is one of them. While you can never earn your way into the Kingdom of God, your behavior is a reflection of the value you attach to God’s wonderful gift of redemption. If you are casual with the things of God, it very clearly says you don’t value what Jesus did for you. But if you are endeavoring to let holiness emerge in your life, it suggests you attach great value to it. Scripture says it in the plainest of language: “Be holy in all you do.” So let’s take the boundaries God gives us and treat them personally, no matter what our culture says.

Heavenly Father, Your holiness and perfection are beyond anything I can imagine, yet You call me to be holy as You are holy. I am thankful that You have not left me to strive on my own but have given me the gift of Your Word as a light for my path and the Holy Spirit as a guide for my thoughts and actions. Lord, may I live in such a way that people who see me know that I am Your follower. In Jesus’ name, amen.
