An Audience of One
"The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give You a tenth of my income.’" Luke 18:11-12
One of the biggest temptations in our lives is the temptation to live for other people. We tend to concern ourselves with others’ actions, worry about others’ words, and focus on pleasing and impressing others. But in our pursuit of others’ approval, we can easily lose our focus on what God wants us to do and who He wants us to be. And we can become hypocritical.
As you go through your day, don’t concern yourself with impressing others. Live, as Pastor Ed says, for an audience of One. Concern yourself with how God sees you. Because when we focus on Him, we won’t worry about “them”.
Pray for the discipline and discernment you need to live for God, and God alone. Pray for the courage to overcome the need for approval from others.
Write down a list of people you constantly try to impress. Is God on that list? If not, place His name at the top!
