An Active Response
1 Corinthians 12:11 (NIV®)
All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
The Holy Spirit decides which spiritual gifts each of us is given. We don’t choose them, but they do require our cooperation. Sometimes I believe Christians are somewhat insincere about this topic. It’s not uncommon for me to hear people say, “I’m open to any gift God has for me,” as if that fully expresses their responsibility. For what God has done to be effective in my life, I have to respond with something other than, “God, if you want me, come get me.” The Bible says we are to eagerly desire spiritual gifts. Think about the effort you give for something you eagerly desire. It invades your calendar, your spending, and your thoughts. I am inviting you purposefully and intentionally, to move beyond saying, “God, whatever You have, I’ll receive it,” to the pursuit of all that God would make available to you and through you.
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You determine the gifts You want to impart to me. I choose to seek after You to understand the purpose of each one and to cultivate a new desire for the gifts You have planned to give me. Give me a hunger for Your Word and a determination to set aside time to spend in Your presence. Help me today to use the gifts You have given me, that Your love and power will be evident in my life and Your purposes fulfilled in the earth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
