Agreement

Description

Unity, or agreement, should be one of the signs of a healthy Christian family. When your family is experiencing disunity, it proves selfishness and a lack of love for one another.

1 Corinthians 1:10

I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

The Apostle Paul was challenging the Christians in the city of Corinth to quit arguing over the little things because it was destroying their unity. Try to imagine what it would be like in your home if you stopped arguing over the little things like who goes first, who gets their way, or “who started it.” Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

Unity, or agreement, should be one of the signs of a healthy Christian family. It is proof that we understand Jesus’ call to deny ourselves (Lk 9:24) and seek the well being of others (1 Cor 10:24). When your family is experiencing disunity, it proves the exact opposite: selfishness and a lack of love for one another.

Can we agree that God desires us to love and serve one another? Can we agree that He doesn’t like it when we fight? Can we agree that He wants us to treat each other with dignity and respect? Can we agree that life is much better when we are living at peace with one another? If your family answers, “Yes” to all of these things…you are off to a great start!

APPLICATION: As a family, think of other Christian principles that you can agree on and make a list! Post the list on your refrigerator and then make sure you look at it each day as a reminder of your agreement on these big issues as well as your commitment to pursue them together as a family.
