Against All Odds

Lourdes Gualsaqui Torres, 34, is a preschool teacher and a council member in her community in Ecuador. Her success is all the more remarkable because she was a third-grade dropout who married at 16.

With encouragement and financial help from World Vision, Lourdes earned her high school diploma in her 20s and in 2016, completed a college degree in teaching.

Pray for the protection of children who aren’t attending school.

Many children can’t attend school because their families depend on their income or the walk to school is too long or dangerous. The 120 million children worldwide not enrolled in school are at greater risk for exploitation, early marriage, and lower income-earning potential. Half of the world’s out-of-school children live in conflict-affected countries so their opportunities are few.

Father God, lay a blanket of protection over children who cannot attend school, especially those whose educations are disrupted by conflict, emergencies, and natural disasters. In Your mercy, provide opportunities for learning so that through education they find the hope and skills for a better future.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” —Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
