After healing a man who was lame from birth, Peter delivers a convicting message to the people and another to the Sanhedrin (3-4). The church continues to grow, but the apostles are persecuted because of their message (5). Deacons are appointed to assist the apostles (6), and one of them, Stephen, speaks with such wisdom and authority that he is dragged before the Sanhedrin to be condemned. In his defense before the Jewish rulers, Stephen reviews the biblical narrative from the call of Abraham to the time of David and Solomon. Both Joseph and Moses were initially rejected by their people and later vindicated as God’s deliverers, and Stephen charges that in the same way, the people have resisted the Holy Spirit by rejecting Jesus as their Messiah.
