Abram’s Promise

Description

The key to Abram’s obedience is his belief. When we believe what God says, we receive the blessing of a stronger faith and a more intimate relationship with Him.

Scripture: Genesis 15:1-17:27

Before diving into the reading, I have to make sure you noticed Genesis 12:3b. “All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.” In case you missed it, "All the families of the earth" means you and me. Take a minute and thank God for this promise to Abram. We are heirs with Christ because of Abram’s obedience. Wow.

Abram recognizes God’s sovereignty over all things. He knows he is blessed, yet desires one more blessing: a son. Abram trusts God with his deepest longing and God responds with the promise of a lifetime. "Look up in to the heavens and count the stars if you can. Your descendants will be like that - too many to count!" (v. 5) Like Abram, we can trust our deepest desires with God and be confident He will bless us with His best.

The key to Abram’s obedience is his belief. Did you notice his response to God’s promise? “Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD declared him righteous because of his faith.” (v. 6) When we believe what God says, we receive the blessing of a stronger faith and a more intimate relationship with Him. This stronger faith and close relationship gives us spiritual eyes to see all the ways He blesses. Unbelief, on the other hand, keeps us from experiencing the life Christ died to give us.

Despite his belief and righteousness, Abram’s faith seems to falter along the way. Hence, he allows the debacle between Sarai and Hagar. Abram tries to "help" God with His revealed plan. I have often tried to “help” God by trying to force His timeline to move quicker. I’ve done so with the mindset that I was following His leading. Perhaps you have learned, like me, that waiting on God’s plan is so much more beneficial than trying to help.
