A Quiet Heart
My loving God, I find peace as I rest between Your shoulders. Here alone, I am secure.
Are you able to find this place of rest?
We are very easily distracted and the world in which we live today hardly helps! We live more virtually connected lives than ever before. But such lives can end up being very distracted, disturbed--and disconnected.
This psalm, however, points us to a very different way of thinking and of being. As I read it I cannot help but think of the story of Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42). Martha is busy with all kinds of things--with good things, but not with what is best. Mary, her sister, makes the better choice and chooses instead to sit at Jesus' feet. "Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her," he says (42). With that story in mind, read this psalm again.
Can you imagine Mary saying it, as she sits, "calmed and quieted" at Jesus' feet? And can you imagine saying it yourself, as you yourself spend time at Jesus' feet--not necessarily talking, but simply enjoying his presence and his peace?
Take time now to "choose what is better," and sit at Jesus' feet, your soul stilled and quietened in him.
Lord, thank You that when I choose the one Thing that is needed, it will never be taken from me.
