A Proper Perspective

None of us is self-sufficient and we must guard ourselves against the temptation to think we are.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 (NIV®)

You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.

God had just delivered the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt, and Moses was preparing them for their new life in the freedom God had provided. He’s warning them about the inclination to look at all you have and say, “Look at what I have done!” We all are tempted to look at the blessings of our lives and say, “Look at what I have accomplished. Look at what I have made happen.” We all are tempted to forget that the Lord is the one who has given us those opportunities. Let’s guard our hearts so that we will keep a proper perspective of God at work in our lives, and give Him thanks for it.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the abilities and gifts You’ve given me. The strength of my hands and any other ability I may have is a blessing from You. May my heart and my words always acknowledge Your provision for me. And may I always be quick to give You thanks for all the ways You are at work in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
