A Plumb Line

Description

God's Word is like a plumb line. Without it, we’re just guessing, hoping we’ll get it right.

Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with mePSALM 119:97 – 98.

Have you ever hung wallpaper and just guessed that you were hanging it straight? I have—and it was a disaster! I learned the hard way that I should have used a plumb line because wallpaper can look straight yet be very crooked.

As we look at the way we live our lives, things can seem fairly straight. We compare ourselves with each other and adjust our values to fit the norm. And before we realize it, we’re in a crooked, mismatched mess.

God asked the prophet Amos, “What do you see, Amos?” And he replied, “A plumb line” (Amos 7:8). God then indicated that His Word is like a plumb line. Without it, we’re just guessing, hoping we’ll get it right. God’s Word tells us what is right and wrong, what is pleasing to God and what is not.

Don’t just stumble along. Use God’s plumb line. Read the Word!
