A Natural Saleswoman

Hang, middle, with her son San, talk to their neighbor Anh about rice farming.

Hang and her husband do not use pesticides and chemical fertilizers for planting rice. They also raise pigs organically and produce their own biogas for cooking. She takes every opportunity to share her enthusiasm for natural farming methods with her neighbors. She wants them all to protect their environment together.

Their successful cultivation enables the parents not only to support their family, but also to ensure their children’s education.

In their community, more than 300 families use their own biogas for cooking. Among them, 40 families have applied the environmentally friendly farming methods for rice-planting combined with pig-raising. The farmers decided to fully stop using pesticide and chemical fertilizers on 7 hectares of pilot rice fields.

San explains how the system works: “The green fuel source for biogas is the waste from my family's pigsty. My parents also use the waste treated from biogas tanks to make compost for our rice-fields and vegetables garden. And what’s more, thanks to the biogas system, there’s no more bad smell from the pigsty.”
