A Husband’s Love

Marriage is not easy. But then again, most of the best things in life take a lot of work and prayers.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. (Ephesians 5:25-28 ESV)

My daughters are at the age where they are venturing into the dating world. Oh, how a mother’s prayer life gets a boost during this season!

As I am married to a man who deserves some kind of award (he lives with three women, and even the dog is female). This of course results in him being exposed to chick flicks, raging hormones and sometimes (often), slightly irrational behaviors.

So what I see in him is what I hope my daughters find in their future husbands. A man who puts others before him, is a giver, and has bitten his tongue so many times there are callouses running on each side. But so much better to have a man with a hardened tongue than a hard heart.  He’s by no means perfect, and is on his own journey of growth, but he tries (or is a super good actor).

If you’re reading this and your marriage isn’t all that God designed, then talk to the Lord about it. Read Stormie Omartian’s book, The Power of a Praying Wife and find a woman who has a strong marriage to mentor and pray with you. I’m about to reread the book for the third time, but really, the first chapter is – for me – the key one. I pray for his wife. That my heart would soften and my trust grow. And my mouth . . . move less.   And if you’re so inclined, pray that your husband will read another of Stormie’s books, The Power of a Praying Husband.

Marriage is not easy. But then again, most of the best things in life take a lot of work and prayers.

Father, thank You for giving us a blueprint on marriage. Help us to honor our husbands and to be the kind of wives they deserve. We need You to change our hearts and minds! And please pursue our men’s hearts that they would walk with you in obedience and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
