A Giving Heart

Description

Laura LeKander stands in front of a closet filled with hygiene supplies donated for women seeking help in a Minnesota shelter.

Laura says these items mean a lot to the residents of the shelter; they represent much more than the value of the goods themselves.

"Families look forward to stuff like this (the donated supplies),” she says. It boosts a woman’s self-confidence to pamper herself with a product that she doesn’t have the money to buy, she says. And even more important is “giving your child something that they want so they can fit in with the other kids, and that you can't provide for them.”

World Vision has helped support the shelter through donations of items such as personal hygiene items, cleaning products for the shelter facilities, and clothing for the women and children. Over Christmas, World Vision donated toys for the children and even wrapping paper for gifts.

For women living at the shelter as they struggle to get back on their feet, it helps for them to know that people in the community are supporting them and supporting the shelter staff.

By experiencing generosity, they begin to believe that they can find something better in their lives, Laura says.
