A Gift Given
Hebrews 9:12-14 (MSG®)
He also bypassed the sacrifices consisting of goat and calf blood, instead using his own blood as the price to set us free once and for all. If that animal blood and the other rituals of purification were effective in cleaning up certain matters of our religion and behavior, think how much more the blood of Christ cleans up our whole lives, inside and out. Through the Spirit, Christ offered himself as an unblemished sacrifice, freeing us from all those dead-end efforts to make ourselves respectable, so that we can live all out for God.
Most of us choose pathways that we hope will bring some degree of respectability to our lives -- achievement or accumulation or education or something that we think will elevate us -- because if we can achieve that respectability, it will make us feel whole and purposeful and fulfilled. None of those things is wrong, but you can achieve or accumulate or gain a remarkable education and still feel as incomplete as when you began the journey. Jesus has accomplished something on our behalf that gives us peace with God and therefore peace with all of creation, and imparts to us a value and a meaning and a purpose that transcends everything else. The basis of that transaction is the blood of Jesus Christ. When we understand the extravagance of that gift and the authority it confers on us, we are set free to reorder our priorities and serve the Living God with a whole heart.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the blood of Jesus. Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve worked to find fulfillment outside of Your provision. I want to know Your peace, contentment, and all that You have for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
