A Father's Charge
Description
"So now, with God as our witness, and in the sight of all Israel—the LORD's assembly—I give you this charge." 1 Chronicles 28:8a (NLT)
Growing up, when my momma spoke, I listened—most of the time. When my daddy spoke though … I sat straight-up at attention and immediately obeyed. When he talked, my brother and I knew our dad meant business. As a seasoned parent, I now realize when my father called a family meeting, his words, though sometimes tough and hard to hear, were for my good, protection, and well-being. He knew about things I did not and tried to lead me to become what I was meant to be.
David had important information and a charge to share with Solomon, so he called a family assembly. The charge is one you and I should heed today as well. By pursuing the charge David gave to Solomon, I trust the Lord will honor us with the same result: peace and freedom.
Let's look at his wise counsel:
- Obey all the commands of the Lord your God
- Know the God of your ancestors intimately
- Worship and serve God wholeheartedly and with a willing spirit
David concludes his charge with, "For the LORD sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him." (1 Chronicles 29:9b NLT) God is not hiding. When we look for Him through reading the Bible, prayer, and study, we will discover His presence, His ways, and His will. Don't you just love that? He is our Father. His words, advice, and instructions are for our good, protection and well-being. The Lord knows things we do not know and wants to teach us these things so we become all we were meant to be.
