5 Reasons to Live in the Right Person's Shadow

Description

Referencing the book of Psalms, Maria Morgan speaks about the benefits of living in God's shadow.

Did you grow up in someone else’s shadow? I’m four years younger than my brother, Karl. I remember being afraid that I wouldn’t be able to live up to the standard he set in school.

I encountered the same question over and over from my junior high teachers, “Are you Karl’s sister?” With one question, the invisible bar had been set. I could almost hear them thinking, He did really well in my class – I’m sure you’ll do just as well. No pressure, right?

If you’ve experienced something similar, I’m sure you can sympathize. But have you ever thought that there may be benefits to living in someone’s shadow? I know you’re probably shaking your head, but stay with me.

Live in God's shadow

The right shadow

Believe it or not, if you choose to live in the right person’s shadow, you’ll be very satisfied. You probably know whose shadow I’m talking about. The Psalmist David introduces us to the Person the shadow belongs to:

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1

If you guessed ‘God’, you’re absolutely right.

When we live and mature in the shadow of Almighty God there are benefits galore.

Some amazing benefits

He provides us with refuge (Psalm 91:2)

A refuge is a safe shelter that offers protection from something threatening, harmful, or unpleasant (Encarta Dictionary). I don’t know about you, but there are plenty of unpleasant things I encounter on a daily basis that have me looking for a refuge. When I’m willing to stay close to God, in His shadow, He IS that refuge, and provides the protection I need.

He is our fortress (Psalm 91:2)

Have you ever been in a castle? Pretty secure, right? Documentaries have done a good job portraying fortresses as closely guarded, fortified places that are impenetrable to the enemy. The Lord acts as a fortress for us, guarding us and closing out the things that can harm us.

He delivers us (Psalm 91:3)

Although we may go through extremely difficult things, the Lord WILL deliver us. When we’re living in His presence, we can avoid the traps the enemy lays for us. God’s discernment will guide us.

He covers us (Psalm 91:4)

Imagine the picture the Psalmist paints:

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: Psalm 91:4a

I can see a mother hen with her chicks tucked up under her wings – protecting them from everything that is trying to harm them. The Lord does the same for us when we stay in the crook of His arm, in His very shadow.

He takes away our fear (Psalm 91:5-7)

We can experience peace when we live in the Lord’s shadow. We’ll still face difficulties and tough stuff, but God will be with us through it all.

Living in someone’s shadow can be very rewarding when we’re living in the shadow of the Almighty!
