2 Timothy 1
Second Timothy contains Paul’s parting words to his younger associate, Timothy, and by listening in, we can gain wise and godly counsel that is as relevant to the problems we face today as it was to the problems Timothy faced in the first century. This is a powerful manual for spiritual combat, and it encourages us to be diligent and courageous and to make the most of the opportunities that God has given us.
After a brief greeting, Paul reviews Timothy’s conversion and reminds him to fan into flame the gift he received and to overcome timidity with God’s power (1:1-7). He invites Timothy to join with him in suffering for the gospel, knowing that Christ will guard whatever He entrusts to him (1:8-14). Paul commends Onesiphorus who supported him and sought him out in Rome when other believers abandoned him (1:15-18).
