1 Timothy 4

Description

A tour of 1 Timothy 4 with Ken Boa.

The epistles of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus do not fit against the background of the book of Acts since they were written after Paul’s release from his first Roman imprisonment (Acts 28). The events in the last years of Paul’s life must be reconstructed from clues that are provided in these epistles. It appears that in spite of his statement in Acts 20:25, Paul did return to Ephesus, and after Timothy joined him there, he instructed Timothy to stay in Ephesus while he went into Macedonia (1:3). He wrote this epistle to Timothy while in Macedonia (probably Philippi) in A.D. 62 or 63 when he realized his return to Ephesus might be delayed (3:14-15).

In view of the influence of false teachers, Paul exhorts Timothy to counter error with the truths of the gospel and to set an example to others of purity of life and doctrine as he continues to use his spiritual gift (4:1-16).
