1 Timothy 3

Description

A tour of 1 Timothy 3 with Ken Boa.

Paul’s purpose in writing this epistle to his disciple and emissary, Timothy, is clear in 3:15: “in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.” This letter is really a leadership manual that was designed to provide practical guidance to Timothy on a number of specific issues. Those including: personal exhortations to godliness and development of his spiritual gifts, directions for worship in the churches, defending apostolic doctrine in the face of false teaching, instructions about widows and elders, the temptations of wealth, and faithfulness to his calling.

Paul lists the qualifications for overseers in 3:1-7 (in the New Testament church, bishops and elders referred to the same office; Acts 20:17, 28; Titus 1:5, 7), and the qualifications for deacons in 3:8-13.

READING of 1 TIMOTHY 3

Prayer:

Lord, by common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, was vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
