Safe

Description

For those who believe, the name of the Lord is a strong tower, a place of safety when trouble comes.

As the pandemic continues and uncertainties rise with the news of COVID variants, the moans and jokes about to-mask or not-to-mask have been replaced by serious prayers. Add to that the social upheavals in our country plus your own personal challenges and it’s easy to conclude that the world isn’t safe, and neither, according to C.S. Lewis, is God. Good, yes, but “safe”? The mountains shake before him! The demons run in fear of him!

But for those who believe, the name of the Lord is a strong tower. A place where we can run in times of trouble. Like a child who pulls the covers over their head in a storm, we have a hiding place -- a safe place in God.

In that place I can solidly proclaim that He hedges me in behind and before. He stands before me as a shield. He sets me high above and out of the reach of my enemies.

And in that safety, under the shadow of his wings, he trains my hands to war, my fingers to fight. He reinforces my faith so that every flaming dart of the enemy aimed at me is snuffed out, extinguished, quenched. Victory is of the Lord. There is an unseen force fighting with me as he fights for me.

And I am able to smile down at my enemies from the protected tower of the Lord and know that their days are numbered, their defeat is imminent. I am safe in God.

Will you join me in that place? Will you push your fears and anxious thoughts to the side and step into the Lord’s comfort and calm even as news of the pandemic or social unrest or whatever the enemy has hurled your way seems to surround you?

We are the ones who will sing in the fire. We are the ones that will lift up the light, a shining beacon of hope in troubled times, calling others to join us in this secret, safe place in God.

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10, NKJV)

A prayer: God, I come to you in faith. You are my strong tower. You are my hiding place. I am safe in you. When uncertainty swirls around me, help me to receive your calm and comfort. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
