Switched Quote: “... Before we idolize or bully someone, we should imagine what it’s like to walk a day in their shoes.”
Switched Scripture: "Try to do what is good for others, not just what is good for yourselves." (1 Corinthians 10:24)
This verse, try to do what is good for others, not just what is good for yourself, was written to a group of people who lived in Corinth. They were known as the Corinthians and they were struggling with looking out for themselves and not caring for the needy in their community. The Apostle Paul gives a simple instruction that is not easy to live out. In order to do what is good for someone else, you must look beyond your own needs.
Humans were designed to survive. We have an innate fallen nature that causes us to think of our own needs first. We tend to want to make sure we are OK and then share with others out of our excess. While it is true that we can’t give what we don’t have, God’s economy is different. He says in our weakness, He is strong. Paul says this a little differently but it's the same sentiment. I love that Paul says “try”! He doesn’t expect perfection; he encourages Jesus followers to try to do good. And the best way to try is to ask God for help.
Although it may not make common sense to do good for others even when they are treating you poorly. God’s economy turns things upside down. When you do something for the least of these, you have done it for God.
