I Want To Be Her, Not Like Her

Switched Quote:  “I want to be her, not like her.”

Switched Scripture: "A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones." (Proverbs 14:30)

There is an old expression: “the grass is always greener on the other side.” It is easy to look at someone else’ life and think that they have it better than you do. We all do it all the time. We look at how someone is dressed, how well their makeup and hair looks and make assumptions about their life.

Social media feeds into this comparison. Most people only post “their best selves.” If we look to social media as a barometer for life, on any given day everyone else’s lives look better than ours.  And on a bad day, our own life may end up looking downright pathetic compared to your friends filtered pictures.

Proverbs encourages us to embody peace because calm brings life. It warns us not to envy because the ugly part of comparison literally rots your bones. Envy ruins your life. Life is not easy and there will be bad days.

God gives another instruction that helps us apply the idea found in Proverbs. “Let the peace that passes understanding guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.”

When life’s challenges feel like they may swallow you whole, give yourself a time out. Call upon God’s peace to protect your heart even if the comparison still exists.

Switched Prayer: Dear Lord, may you search in my heart for the places I envy others and guide me to a place of peace so I can love others instead of envying them. Amen
