“…if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Known by the name of God. Known for His love. Known for His power. Known for His mercy. Known for His reconciliation. Known for creating out of His beauty.

These are the first thoughts that come to mind after I read the first few words of 2 Chronicles 7:14. A people known by God and a people known for His ways. This was the undergirding theme and collective goal of Israel -- a people chosen by God.

In context, this revival ready verse sits right in the middle of the Old Testament account of Solomon proclaiming boldly his commitments to God on behalf of the people of Israel. He stands in the middle of the grandest temple ever built and commits to the Lord that the people will worship only one God…the one and only God. This passage finds us reading God’s response back to Solomon which contains His holy promise to the chosen.

As New Testament believers, can we take hold of this promise, too? Can we position ourselves to beg God to heal our land?

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:3-6)

A people called by His name around the world with different ethnicities, different languages, and different cultures can still come together as one and surrender to the name of Jesus as Lord.

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)

We read throughout the Old Testament how Israel vacillates between worshipping one true God and creating their own idols and false gods. They create statues, bow down in worship, and sacrifice to these gods created by human-limited hands all because they forget God’s goodness and love. How does a people group who experienced the Red Sea parting and multitude of miracles deny their allegiance and pure worship?

We could very well ask the same questions ourselves even as those who believe that Jesus died on the cross and rose in victory over sin three days later. I believe Israel didn’t fully grasp to the core of their being the depth of God’s love for His chosen. Thus they turned to false imaginations that these idols would meet their needs. And, I believe that modern day Christians do the very same thing in the name of comfort, peace, security, success, accolades, and more.

What lack do we assume in our lives that we turn away from the fullness of Christ toward lesser things? What ways do we act or what words do we say all because we believe God is holding out on us? These lesser things, these handmade idols are not His best for us.

We are called by His name, there is no earthly or heavenly reason to call upon any other. Politicians, experts, YouTubers, Insta-famous square fillers…these people are not our Messiah. They will in no way bring us back to that end goal: to reconcile us back to the Father’s original design. The fellowship with our Creator is what the depth of our soul yearns for. Jesus made that possible. Jesus alone. He changes everything.

He makes all things new, right, lovely, just, beautiful, peaceful, delightful, joyful. He brings us back to where we belong.

Call on His name when fear threatens your peace: Jesus!

Call on His name when uncertainty clouds your vision: Jesus!

Call on His name when your day is delightful: Jesus!

Call on His name when every last cell in your body is depleted with exhaustion: Jesus!

Call on His name: Jesus!

There is no other God but Him.

Prayer Points:

~Lord, show me the power that is in the name of Jesus…

~I’m sorry for the ways I devalue Your name…

~Help me know, truly know how You call me Your own…

~Forgive me when I forget that You alone offer fullness and contentment…
