Another important spiritual discipline is the act of memorizing Scripture. As Christians, we are called to carry the Word in our hearts. When we memorize Scripture, we will have easy access to it when we need the encouragement or direction it provides. However, memorizing Scripture might seem challenge. Even though we can memorize songs or movie lines, we fight against putting Scripture to memory. The good news is, you don’t have to memorize every book of the Bible. You should start somewhere, though, like with phrases or verses that are meaningful to you. Today, learn how you can start memorizing bits of Scripture and build up your Bible-memory repertoire.

God, I know how important it is to keep the Word hidden in my heart, but my brain has trouble recalling it. Help me learn Your Word, and more importantly, through your Spirit, give me the ability to easily recall it.
Do I know popular songs by heart better than I know Scripture?
Find a verse to memorize and write it on an index card. Keep the card where you can see it. Practice reciting your Scripture verse throughout the day, and then test yourself at the end of the week. If you have memorized your verse, begin with a new one.
When you start out slowly with verses God shows you, you can start to memorize Scripture. After you are comfortable memorizing small portions, you can add longer verses, or you can start memorizing more frequently. Any step you take toward a more spiritually disciplined life is a good step. We are all called to grow in our faith, and these spiritual disciplines are a good way to foster that growth. Another spiritual discipline is prayer, which is conversation with God. Find out how to pray as Jesus did for close communion with God in the next post.
