Jesus' Purpose on Earth

Jesus came to earth for one purpose: to offer Himself as a living sacrifice so that we all may find salvation.

Christ reveals Himself throughout his earthly life as the Savior sent by the Father for the salvation of the world. His very name, “Jesus,” expresses this mission, as it is translated “the Lord saves.” If we seek only the promises of the world, we will never be totally satisfied in this life, and we will never get to experience the joy of heaven. However, if our focus is to please God, we will find joy both here on earth and (to an even greater degree) when we unite with Jesus in heaven. Through Jesus, we have the opportunity to join Him in heaven for eternity. By heeding His call to turn from dependence on ourselves to entrusting ourselves to Him, we too can find eternal life.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17)

Jesus introduces a major shift in the religious requirements laid down by the Jewish leaders of his day. Whereas these leaders placed great importance on the outward observance of the law, claiming that one could enter heaven by such observances, Jesus teaches that the requirements of the law go much deeper, to our inner thoughts and motives. Only Jesus himself is able to keep God’s law perfectly, and therefore we must trust in him—not in our good works—for salvation.

“For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” (John 9:39)

Although Jesus did not come to judge the world in the sense of condemnation, his message does judge the heart in terms of reception—some will seek the truth while others will seek to avoid it. In this verse, Jesus refers to spiritual sight (“the light,” as he calls it elsewhere). Those who suppose that they see are actually blind, but those who acknowledge their desperate condition before God are the ones who actually see.

“For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.” (John 10:17)

His primary purpose on earth was to give his life as a sacrifice to cover the guilt and shame of humanity. He would endure the agony of death, but it would not defeat him, because he would rise up out of the grave on the third day.

“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13–14)

Speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well who had drawn water for him, Jesus offers “living water.” Using the metaphor of water, Jesus is telling us that the drink—that is, the life-giving sustenance he offers—will satisfy us forever.

Reflection: Have you considered the fact that Jesus willingly gave up His own life in order that you might be able to join Him in heaven?
